Treating Mental Health Issues with Naturopathic Medicine

If you suffer from a mental illness, you're not alone!

About one-quarter of the North American population currently suffers from some form of mental disorder, such as  schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorder, and major depressive disorder.

As a person with a mental health condition, you want to feel like a productive, functioning member of society. Instead, even after trying different solutions to medicate your condition, you may not feel as though you're getting better, or your quality of life is not what you would like it to be. What's worse is you may be experiencing  physical problems as a result of side effects of your medications. This can be confusing, frustrating, and discouraging.

Even though psychiatric medications can be very effective at stabilizing acute conditions, they can also fall short in some areas. When used long term, their side effects, such as apathy, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, tardive dyskinesia and dystonia, and changes in weight can leave patients unable to function properly day to day. In some cases, they may not work at all.

The Power Of Naturopathic Medicine For Mental Health

What I have learned while studying and working as a naturopathic doctor is that proper nutrition, nutritional supplements, and herbs have many of the same effects as psychiatric medications without the debilitating side effects.

Over time, the use of nutritional supplements can:

  • help people with mental illness attain a better quality of life
  • reduce the number or dosages of pharmaceutical medications they need to take to manage their conditions

My first patient with a mental health condition came to visit me shortly after a suicide attempt due to severe anxiety and depression.

After a one-hour consultation, I prescribed an herb and a supplement for him. I chose these natural remedies because they don't interact with the medication he was already taking.

He started taking them immediately and I advised him to continue taking them for at least 6 weeks. After 2 months and 5 visits, he was no longer depressed or considering suicide and his anxiety levels were much lower.

As a naturopathic doctor, I work to provide a treatment that will

  • complement the pharmaceutical medications you are already taking
  • reduce the negative side effects of your medications
  • address YOUR specific issues and treat them accordingly
